Plot: Based on the life of Ned Hanlan, the late-19th century Canadian sculler and world champion. Hanlan was one of the first scullers to successfully utilize the "sliding seat."

Alternative Plot: Based on a real-life story, this drama follows Ned Hanlan (Nicolas Cage), a Canadian competitive rowing champion. Though Ned is a trouble-prone young man, his fierce determination makes him a formidable athlete. Ned eventually receives support from the wealthy but unscrupulous Knox (Christopher Plummer), who nurtures his talent for his own gain. Although Ned tires of Knox's methods, he falls for the businessman's lovely niece, Margaret (Cynthia Dale), which complicates matters.
