Following her discovery, she was approached by FBI agents who questioned her about her possible involvement in the leak. Ultimately, Winner admitted to being responsible for disclosing the document. The media responded with a mixture of praise and criticism for her actions, while The Intercept, the publication implicated in the leak, faced scrutiny as well. As a consequence, Winner was charged and received a four-year prison sentence under the Espionage Act. She was placed on supervised release until November 2024.
