To Catch a Thief (1955)

7.4

Plot: For more than a decade, the dashing, retired jewel thief, John Robie, previously known as "The Cat", has been living quietly in his picture-perfect villa on the cosmopolitan, sun-kissed Côte d'Azur. However, someone is prowling the French Riviera, and as a spate of audacious diamond thefts is terrorising the Cannes, John will have no other choice but to spring back into action to clear his name. Indeed, John is caught between a rock and a hard place, and as if that weren't enough, the svelte and sophisticated nouveau-riche heiress, Frances Stevens, is on to him. But, who could be the real culprit? Above all, what will it take to catch a thief?

Alternative Plot: Notorious cat burglar John Robie (Cary Grant) has long since retired to tend vineyards on the French Riviera. When a series of robberies is committed in his style, John must clear his name. Armed with a list of people who own the most expensive jewels currently in the area, John begins following the first owner, young Francie (Grace Kelly). When her jewels are stolen, Francie suspects John, destroying their tentative romance. John goes on the lam to catch the thief and clear his own name.
