Plot: Successful architect Will Roberts organizes a grand surprise birthday party for his wife Mandy with their daughter Kelly and college days friend, only to be told afterward she wants a divorce to lead her own life. Soon each spouse commits to another lover.
Alternative Plot: Jane Thornton (Cheryl Ladd) is a successful attorney on her way to Seattle to visit her best friend, Mandy (Bess Armstrong). As they plan a party for Mandy's birthday, Mandy reveals that she's unhappy with her husband, Will (William R. Moses), and wants a divorce. The recently widowed Jane consoles them both but finds herself developing feelings for Will. The bonds of loyalty and love are tested as Jane tries to reconcile her friendship with Mandy and her newfound interest in Will.
