Contempt (1963)

Le mépris

Plot: After a solemn declaration of love, devotion, and everlasting adoration, the financially hard-pressed French playwright, Paul Javal, asks his beautiful, but so insecure, young wife, Camille, to join him on a trip to Cinecittà. But, there, summoned by the coarse American producer, Jeremy Prokosch, to improve and commercialise Fritz Lang's screen adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey", Paul eventually succumbs to compromise, and a crippling marital sin. Now, at the money-oriented producer's sun-kissed villa in Capri, Paul witnesses the rapid disintegration of his once-cloudless relationship unfold. Is this the end of Paul and Camille's marriage?

Alternative Plot: Scenes from a marital breakdown between screenwriter (Michel Piccoli) and his wife (Brigitte Bardot), as both become enmeshed in the behind-the-camera struggles of a director (Fritz Lang) and producer (Jack Palance) as they film an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey.
