Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)

6.1

Plot: Playwright Siddalee Walker (Sandra Bullock), on the verge of opening a new play, gives a Time Magazine interview in which she discusses her unhappy childhood. Her mother is furious and cuts her off. Her mother's friends, who formed a secret society, the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, as children, kidnap Siddalee from her New York apartment and take her home to Louisiana, where they explain why her mother mistreated her with help from the secret Ya-Ya scrapbook (and flashbacks).

Alternative Plot: A classic Southern tale of hilarious sadness set in a sleepy Louisiana parish. A group of lifelong friends stage a rather unorthodox intervention to help a young playwright unravel the truth about her complicated, eccentric mother, find forgiveness and acceptance, and let go of her painful past.
