Farewell to the King (1989)

6.2

Plot: An American soldier who escapes the execution of his comrades by Japanese soldiers in Borneo during WWII becomes the leader of a personal empire among the headhunters in this war story told in the style of Joseph Conrad and Rudyard Kipling. The American is reluctant to rejoin the fight against the Japanese on the urging of a British commando team but conducts a war of vengeance when the Japanese attack his adopted people.

Alternative Plot: After escaping from imprisonment by Japanese forces, American soldier Learoyd (Nick Nolte) takes shelter in the remote wilderness of Borneo. When Learoyd encounters a primitive tribe out in the jungle, it seems that he may be in trouble again, but the natives, awed by his unfamiliar appearance, embrace him as a god. Later, British troops discover Learoyd and his followers, and, though he isn't inclined to return to battle, events lead to his fighting for his adopted people.
