The Light Between Oceans (2016)

Plot: Still numb from the exposure to the horrors of World War I and battling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Tom Sherbourne, a war-battered veteran, signs up to get a lustreless job as a Commonwealth lighthouse keeper, 100 miles off the coastal town of Point Partageuse in Western Australia, at the picturesque, yet remote and desolate Janus Island. But ironically, in self-exile, instead of finding the deserving punishment for making it back home while his comrades perished in the frozen Western Front, withdrawn Tom will, in fact, find companionship, love and a caring wife in the person of Isabel, a headstrong and sparky young woman who intends to start a family with him. Nevertheless, fate is against the mortal couple and the much hoped-for baby never arrives, leaving poor Isabel consumed by a fierce despair, up until a rowboat carrying a helpless baby girl washes up ashore answering Isabel's prayers. Is this indeed a Divine Intervention? In the end, before duty and grief, Tom will yield to his wife's heart-breaking plea to keep and raise the baby as their own, still, an unexpected encounter with an enigmatic woman in the mainland will only imply man's blemished perfection and the rippling impact of his actions.

Alternative Plot: Tom is a World War I veteran who maintains a lighthouse off the shore of Australia with his wife Isabel, a woman desperate to have a baby. Her prayers are answered when an infant washes up on shore in a rowboat. Tom thinks they should notify the authorities but ultimately gives in to Isabel's wish to keep the girl. Fate strikes again when the couple meet the child's biological mother on the mainland. Now, Tom and Isabel must make a decision that will forever affect the lives of four people.
