The Iron Giant (1999)

8.1

Plot: Sent from another civilisation somewhere in the black voids of outer space, a massive metal automaton crash-lands on Earth, just outside the unsuspecting town of late-1950s Rockwell, Maine. But, before long, America's luckiest kid, the eleven-year-old boy, Hogarth Hughes, strikes up an acquaintance with the kind robot, unbeknownst to him, however, that the U.S. government agent, Kent Mansley, has set his sights on finding the mysterious extraterrestrial visitor. Now, Hogarth is on a mission to protect both his new best friend and his birthplace, as the obsessed operative is bent on stopping the sentient android at all costs. Can fear and prejudice cost the Iron Giant his life?

Alternative Plot: In this animated adaptation of Ted Hughes' Cold War fable, a giant alien robot (Vin Diesel) crash-lands near the small town of Rockwell, Maine, in 1957. Exploring the area, a local 9-year-old boy, Hogarth, discovers the robot, and soon forms an unlikely friendship with him. When a paranoid government agent, Kent Mansley, becomes determined to destroy the robot, Hogarth and beatnik Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick Jr.) must do what they can to save the misunderstood machine.
